Food Is Good Medicine – Make the Right Choices for your Health


In today’s fast-paced life, many people find it difficult to consume the right foods for a healthy body and tend to ignore the body’s need for good nutrition. Too many rely on convenience foods – mostly foods with empty calories. Sometimes it is difficult to spot these foods because package information can be deceiving, luring you into believing there really is some nutrition in that breakfast bar. “Contains healthy nuts!” “25% of your daily Vitamin D in one serving!” “Low in saturated fat!” Hmm. What about all the other ingredients? The first ingredient on the nutrition label may list nuts but the 2nd and 3rd ingredients are sugar and its evil twin, high fructose corn syrup!


Consuming empty calories is a sure-fire way to set you on a path for weight gain and the development of chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and a host of other killers. New research is published everyday reporting that poor nutrition leads to degenerative diseases and a shorter lifespan.


The numbers are staggering: One-third of Americans are obese; another third are overweight. Some 26 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. An additional, 79 million more are pre-diabetic. With these figures going up, the children of today have a good chance of becoming the first generation of Americans to die at younger ages than their parents.


But there is good news! You can make a difference in your own health by choosing to eat quality foods for your body’s nutrition. Choose natural foods, vegetables and fruits, good meats and fish. Stay away from the white stuff, the sugars, flours and processed grains, and foods made with sugar and high glycemic carbohydrates. Learn to have these only occasionally and not every day.
